Editing services come in three basic categories: proofreading, copy editing and content editing.

Proofreading This is the last step in the writing-and-editing process and is the least comprehensive type of editing. It’s about catching cosmetic errors—spelling, grammar, punctuation, style—as well as catching minor problems with the content. It is not about reworking text or rearranging content.

Copy editing This involves improving the flow, readability and accuracy of writing; editing for grammar, spelling and punctuation; and formatting the copy for visual and typographical style. It also includes fact-checking and watching for inconsistencies in text and photos.

Your copy-editing needs may be light, medium or heavy. A light edit, also known as “proofread-plus,” includes taking care of grammar, spelling and punctuation issues and double-checking facts. A medium edit is a heavier load and includes improving flow and readability and reworking some of the text. A manuscript that requires a medium edit will need more corrections of the grammar, spelling and punctuation variety. A heavy copy edit is even more intensive, with paragraphs being restructured and more rewriting of copy.

Content editing This takes copy editing up a notch and can include creating new content that was left out or rewriting entire sections.
